Alexandre Gallery is pleased to return to Art Basel Miami Beach this December to exhibit in the main gallery section of the fair highlighting both its contemporary program and its specialty in early 20th century American modernism with a focus on the Stieglitz Group. The centerpiece of the booth with be an extraordinary and rare 1951 Willem de Kooning painting titled HEAD from the late Edith Halpert’s personal collection. The de Kooning dates from the beginning of his famed “Woman” series and was acquired by Halpert in 1956 directly from Sidney Janis. It has not been publicly exhibited since a 1960 show of Halpert’s collection at The Corcoran Gallery of Art. The gallery has been fortunate to enjoy a long relationship with Halpert’s family.
Featured will be a focus section of paintings by longtime gallery artist Lois Dodd to celebrate her European retrospective at the Kunstmuseum Den Haag, which has been extended through April 6, 2025. Also presented will be paintings by two artists new to the gallery who each will have one-person shows of new work in the coming months - Tessa Greene O’Brien and Lisa Sanditz. A major Susan Rothenberg painting YELLOW STUDIO from 2002 - 03 will also be included.
Among the historic offerings will be early collages by Romare Bearden and a group of still life paintings by Milton Avery, Marsden Hartley, Loren MacIver and Horace Pippin. A major late geometric Arthur Dove, also from the Halpert Collection, will anchor the American modernists, which will be installed above two carved wooden cabinets by John Laurent, which once furnished Halpert’s infamous Downtown Gallery.
