April 3 – May 10, 2014
This exhibition surveys Loren MacIver’s (American, 1909 – 1998) work from the 1930s to the 80s with a focus on the unique use of light in her semi-abstract depictions of the everyday world around her. Subjects include the Provincetown dune shack artist colony in the 1930s, Greenwich Village in the 40s, Paris in the 60s, and her Perry Street studio in the 80s.
MacIver’s work has been the subject of one-person exhibitions at the Baltimore Museum of Art (1945), Orange County Museum of Art (1983), Phillips Collection (1965) and Whitney Museum of American Art (1953). In 1962 she represented the United States at the XXXI Venice Biennale with 25 paintings. She was represented by Pierre Matisse Gallery from 1940 to 1990. MacIver’s estate has been represented by Alexandre since her death in 1998.
