William King
New Terracottas
April 6 through May 6, 2006
The gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of William King’s terracotta’s. All works are from 2000-2006. This will be King’s second show with the gallery.
William King’s sculpture is comic. But, within the comedy is a darker side. By turns grotesque and satiric, King knowingly renders his subjects in a brutal manner that acutely depicts their qualities. Often working in selfportraiture mode, King imagines himself as an array of characters addressing the idea of complicity by modeling himself in different guises. King uses figuration to explore relatable quotidian experience in its complexity.
King’s work has been the subject of over 60 one-person exhibitions. It is included in public collections such as the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art among many others.
The show may be previewed at www.alexandregallery.com. In winter 2006 the gallery will present William King: Early Work, curated by Sanford Schwartz, which will a historical show focusing on King’s sculpture from the 1950s and 60s in all mediums.
